Hit by pitch (HBP) is the total number of times a player or player equipment exluding his bat, is hit by a non-strike pitch, made sufficient effort to avoid the pitch, and is awarded first base. It's measured over a given time period such as season or career. Generally, for Hit By Pitch, higher is better. (Source)
